The Royal British Legion
The Royal British Legion, nationally, was founded in 1920, after
the First World War to offer support and companionship for
ex-servicemen where the state could not, or would not, help the
wounded, disabled, shell-shocked or simply lost souls who craved
the companionship with like-minded men of action who had been
through much together. In the present climate the Legion
fights on veterans' behalf for pension and welfare rights and
raises funds through the Poppy Appeal to provide rehabilitation,
rest and recreational facilities, help with retraining and moral
and financial support all over the country.
The same spirit of help and community service is still alive
today with a number of initiatives such as " Honour the Covenant
and "Help for Heroes", a campaign which is the
Gresford Legion supports, provides money for UK rehabilitation
facilities and comforts for British forces fighting overseas
by way of food and essentials parcels. The Gresford Royal
British Legion Club was founded in the late 40s by ex-servicemen in
the village of Gresford, Marford and Hosely. The buildings
were purchased from the Ministry of Defence in Wrexham and erected
by the original members on Gresford Trust land to provide a centre
for recreation and social companionship as well as acting as a
centre for charitable works funded by the Poppy Appeal and local
fundraising. The same principles apply today.
- The Gresford Royal British Legion Club provides and
promotes:-
a community-based social centre for all residents of Gresford and
Marford who do not necessarily have to be ex-servicemen to join the
Gresford club, all are welcome for a modest subscription.

medical helicopters etc. with donations from events held at the
club.
The club supports all those ex-service members in need.
- A healthy relationship with the local football, cricket
and bowls clubs is encouraged and they all make use of the leisure
facilities on offer.
- We don't have a bar but we do have on our land The Royal British Legion
The lounge looks out over the two bowling greens and the cricket
field and it is a delight to see so many of our villagers keeping
fit and enjoying themselves in such a wonderful setting.
Our footballers and cricketers often finish up here after their
matches and this demonstrates the support we all give to each other
and the reason the Memorial Hall has no bar.
However don't worry about not being able to have a drink at your
event, you are able to apply for a temporary licence and we can
advise on this.
