Wrexham Carpet Bowling Club New Season September 2007
Wrexham Carpet Bowling Club was formed in 1903 by the Scotch drapers who were very prominent in Wrexham during the early 1900’s up until the 1970’s. The game is played indoors on Boards 24ft long by 3 ft wide covered with a foam backed green polypropylene surface. Originally the Boards were in one piece constructed of timber frame with a one inch block board top. These were very heavy and cumbersome. In 2002 we devised a method of making Boards in modern light weight materials in four sections.This has proved very successful.
Since moving to Gresford our membership has started to rise so we will be looking to produce more boards. The materials alone cost £200 per board and the carpet on the board costs £245.but this is worth it if we can attract people of all ages and abilities.
The other equipment is the Bowls. These are completely different to the Green or Short Mat Bowls. Our bowls are round, approx. 3 3/4ins dia., no bias and only weigh 1 1/2lbs. The club provide the Bowls although some long term members buy their own. If we increase our membership the club would be looking to purchase extra bowls. ie a set of sixteen for two teams at a cost of £340. (the bowling is played by teams of four players who are any age from 11years old and upwards).
Why don’t you come along? It is a friendly club and we meet in the winter months from September to April.
